A polytechnic education emphasizes on learning with practical. They provide Work attachments with industry partners for a duration which can vary from six weeks to six months or even more depending on the course
There are over 50 polytechnics approved by the national board for technical education (NBTE) in Nigeria and many students seek admission into these polytechnics every year.
Polytechnics may not always be the first choice tertiary institutions in Nigeria, nevertheless many admission seekers still chose them due to their easy admission criteria and requirements.
Admission into a polytechnic could be categorized based on the awards issued in a polytechnic: Ordinary National Diploma(OND) and Higher National Diploma(HND).
OND/ ND is a polytechnic award for a two-year course that can grant the holder an employment or even admission into Higher National Diploma(HND) and sometimes can be admitted to a 200 level course in a university through JAMB direct entry. HND on the other hand is a continuation of the ND program. It takes two years to complete and is designed to impart one with skills relevant to his chosen career.
The most important requirement in gaining admission into a polytechnic for an OND program is an O’ level certificate with the correct subject combination for the desired course of study. Below is a rundown on the requirements for an easy admission into the polytechnic based on your program.
OND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Different polytechnics may require some specific documents but the general primary requirements have been listed below. They are:
A minimum of five credits in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations in Mathematics, English Language, and any other three subjects relevant to your course of study.
A minimum mark of 120 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) which is the JAMB cut off mark for polytechnics
Candidate must take part in the post UTME or admission screening exercise of the school. You must meet the minimum admission requirements laid down by JAMB and NBTE before you will be given admission into your proposed course by JAMB and the school.
Another means to gain ND admission is through school-administered programs known as a one-year pre-National Diploma in most polytechnics. This course is usually run as full-time. To gain admission into this one year program, candidates must have:
Four SSCE/GCE/NABTEB passes in four subjects relevant to the program at not more than two sittings. The subjects must include English language, Mathematics and any other two subjects related to your course of study.
With the completion of a one-year pre-National diploma in an NBTE accredited university, one can use his/her certificate to gain admission into a polytechnic for an ND program provided he/she has four credit passes in relevant subjects obtained at the Pre-ND examination.
It is important to note that after completion of a 2-year ND course at any polytechnic, you’re awarded ND. With an ND certificate, one can further his/her education to the university through JAMB direct entry admission.
HND ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
You are only granted HND admission into a polytechnic only on the successful completion of your ND program in an NBTE accredited Polytechnic.
You can decide to further with HND at your polytechnic or any other polytechnic. HND is also a two-year program.
HND is the award given to a polytechnic graduate after completing a 2-year ND, 1 or 2 years Industrial Training (IT), and a 2-year HND course.
It is important to note that the HND course doesn’t require writing UTME again or obtaining the JAMB direct entry form. Applicants are only to take part in the entrance examination, interview or screening organized by the school.
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR HND CANDIDATES
Candidates for Higher National Diploma must have obtained an ND award with at least a lower credit (CGPA) of 2.50 in relevant NBTE accredited programs.
Some schools consider candidates with pass grades and a minimum of two years post qualification experience in their chosen field.
Candidates must have a minimum of Twelve (12) months of supervised industrial experience.
A minimum of 5 credit passes in O-Level subjects relevant to the candidate’s desired fields in not more than two sittings is also required.
For prospective applicants from other institutions, a transcript from candidate’s former institution for admission into every HND program is always required.
The Federal Government has proposed that Nigerian polytechnics will henceforth be limited to the award of ND only. Hence, candidates who wish to study further can obtain JAMB Direct Entry form and cross to universities – where they continue from 200 level.
